hongdae 500 market

the last sunday of every month, the 500 club in hongdae turns into a flea market…. at least that’s what i read when searching for flea markets in seoul. it described an event w/ handmade and used goods, people selling food, drinks and live performances.

it sounded amazing so mikey and i went to check it out. the venue was pretty unexpected: you walk down into the basement, take off your shoes and climb up a short set of stairsand this is what you see. all i could think of was … where did this come from?!almost off the things on sale were for women and it was 80 percent women in there ( the trend in most of korea except bbq places and bars) these girls were selling some handmade postcards and notebooks. i bought some for friends back home. while we were looking at the stuff, the girl on the right tried to secretly take pictures of me and mike (probably just mike). when i asked them to return the favor by letting me take a picture of them, they were quite embarrassed to be found out. there was also a women selling curry 떡복이 (rice cake) but it seemed a little too adventurous sore that day. i had hoped it would be a gathering place of some sorts where people could hang out and meet others as the flier had suggested. however, it was mostly vendors and there wasn’t any space that others could hang out when finished looking at the wares. so we put our shoes back on and went to get some dinner. still, the venue is worth a visit. maybe we will try to check it out at some point when its a club.
