Fellow music obsessor Oscar put me up on a DJ Shadow mix with strictly Korean breaks, “Seoul Know how to Make Music”, featuring the nasty funk and fuzzed out psych of Cherry Parade, The Last Chance, and uh, other highly recognizable outfits from 1970s Seoul. Anyone able to compile a track list of this? Or at least the hangeul letters for said groups listed above; Google searches in English don’t provide much input.
The phenomenon of hard-knocking, occasionally out of this world Korean breaks has been passed around in the hiphop DJ and producer community for a good while now. Shadow might have jumped it all off in sampling HE6’s “Get Ready” (a cover of Rare Earth) for “The Number Song”; you know, in that 1996 Endtroducing album that utterly changed the course of electronic music. There’s more, apparently HE6 was originally HE5, and they put out a crazy Christmas record. We’ll get there soon.
Note: The full song is 14 minutes. How inspiring is it to listen to a Korean cover of an American song, then sampled nearly 25 years later and made into a completely different American song.
